Syed explained that KFSHRC is building a comprehensive cell and gene therapy hub, with strong backing from senior leadership. The goal is to create a full-value chain ecosystem, from research and development to in-house manufacturing, ensuring that patients in Saudi Arabia—and potentially beyond—have access to cutting-edge therapies.

The Saudi healthcare and biotech ecosystem is evolving rapidly. The Saudi FDA has become a robust regulatory body, and funding opportunities are growing from government sources, private investors, and philanthropic supporters.
“This is a golden period for start-ups and investors,” Syed noted. Companies focusing on gene therapies now have an unprecedented opportunity to establish local operations and bring their innovations to market in the Kingdom.

Notably, KFSHRC has treated the first patient in the Kingdom using CAR-T cells manufactured locally at the hospital, under SFDA supervision, and plans are underway to advance in vivo CAR-T therapies into clinical trials.
