The CGT industry is entering a new phase, where scientific progress must translate into scalable, sustainable and accessible therapies.
Nearly a decade after the first CAR-T therapy was approved, the cell and gene therapy (CGT) industry is entering a new phase of maturity. The question is no longer simply whether advanced therapies can work. The challenge now is whether the industry can make them scalable, affordable, commercially sustainable and accessible to the patients who need them.
The scale of activity across the sector demonstrates just how far the field has progressed. More than 2,000 CGT clinical trials are currently underway globally, while 122 CGTs had been approved as of April 2026, comprising 46 gene therapies, including genetically modified cell therapies, and 76 non-genetically modified cell therapies. Four CGTs are now generating more than $1 billion in annual revenue, underlining the sector's growing commercial maturity.

New CGT approvals expected annually through to 2030
Together, these figures point to an industry moving beyond proof of scientific concept and towards a more demanding question: can these therapies be developed, manufactured and delivered at the scale required to make a meaningful impact?
