UK-based independent innovation and technology organization Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult (CGT Catapult), has officially opened new laboratories and offices in the Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, BioQuarter – enhancing Edinburgh’s role as a hub for cell therapies.
Edinburgh is fast becoming a world-leading City for stem cell research, with CGT Catapult’s first site in Scotland located at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute of Regeneration and Repair.
“I am thrilled to be opening the new Edinburgh Laboratories for the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult. Their innovative work is not solely focused on industry and research, but with working closely with the NHS and academic partners, to ensure our health care systems are prepared for the future,” said Michael Matheson, Scottish Cabinet Secretary for NHS Recovery, Health, and Social Care.
The new 350m2 high-specification laboratory space will provide expertise, resources, and technology to cell therapy developers to advance their therapies to market.
Developers will benefit from state-of-art lab-based technologies to help them improve their manufacturing processes, as well as support from CGT Catapult’s office-based team of technical and clinical adoption experts who will help them navigate regulatory environments.

“Edinburgh is home to a thriving life sciences cluster, with leading academics, clinicians, and therapy developers all working in close proximity. By joining the Edinburgh BioQuarter, we hope to accelerate the continued growth and success of this cluster by providing access to the resources and knowledge needed to bring new cell therapies to the market,” commented Matthew Durdy, Chief Executive of the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult.
CGT Catapult also has Manufacturing Innovation Centers in the UK’s Stevenage, Hertfordshire, and Braintree. The Company’s new laboratory and offices in the Edinburgh BioQuarter aim to attract international companies to this growing hub.
