Florian Hänsel

Florian Hänsel is President of the German Association for Synthetic Biology (GASB) and a PhD Researcher in Synthetic Microbiology within the Cluster of Excellence on Plant Sciences (CEPLAS) at Heinrich Heine University D'sseldorf. His research focuses on microbial engineering and data-driven approaches for sustainable biomanufacturing, building on previous work at Imperial College London at the interface of synthetic biology and biotechnology. Beyond his research, he is actively involved in strengthening engineering biology ecosystems across Europe. Through GASB, Florian works at the interface of academia, industry, policy, and entrepreneurship, helping to connect researchers, startups, investors, and public stakeholders. He has contributed to national, European, and international discussions on biotechnology governance, bioeconomy strategy, biosafety, and responsible innovation, including engagements related to the EU Biotech Acts and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In addition to his research, Florian regularly convenes and contributes to cross-sector initiatives and conferences focused on innovation ecosystems, translational infrastructure, and the future of engineering biology. His particular interest lies in how scientific excellence, translational infrastructure, and cross-sector collaboration can be combined to build resilient biotechnology ecosystems and accelerate the responsible deployment of emerging biotechnologies.
